What is the difference between a U.FL, SMA, BNC & N-Type Connector?

Choosing the Right RF Connector for Your Antenna
Did you know that selecting the right RF connector depends heavily on whether your antenna is internal or external?
U.FL is typically used for internal antennas—those placed inside an enclosure. It’s an ultra-compact connector, making it ideal for saving PCB space. But due to its small size, it’s fragile and not designed for frequent mating cycles.
For external antennas, there are three more robust options:
- SMA; The most common choice for external RF antennas. With a 50 Ohm impedance, it offers a compact, secure, and reliable connection.
- BNC; Slightly larger and easier to connect/disconnect than SMA, though it may suffer from impedance mismatching.
- N-Type; The most rugged option, designed for secure connections in tough environments like outdoor or industrial sites.
At Summit Electronics, we help you find the right connector for your specific application.
