What is the difference between internal and external antennas?
28-05-2025
In RF design, the choice between internal and external antennas can make or break the performance of your device.
Internal Antennas:
These compact antennas are embedded inside the device enclosure, often directly on the PCB. Ideal for space-constrained products like smartphones, wearables or IoT sensors. However, they require precise tuning to minimize interference from nearby components.
External Antennas:
Mounted outside the device housing, external antennas are generally larger and easier to optimize. They're ideal for long-range communication and more robust signal performance, since they’re less affected by internal noise.
At Summit Electronics, we help our partners find the right antenna solution – whether embedded or external – and provide support with tuning, matching, and performance testing to ensure reliable connectivity in every environment.
